WOOD: Ash
“My original concept was purely formal. As I got closer to completion I began to realize a philosophical notion was forming in reaction to what the piece was becoming…hence the title. Flow represents the surrounding influences on any given thing or person. Origin shows that each of the elements grows out from one area. Individuality becomes a questionable term. All of the components, while having their differences are growing from the same place, have striking similarities, and are greatly effected by the influences around them. In a broader sense the ideas of individuality and self determination are called into question. Just how truly individual can we or anything be?
